If you are pawn to be wild, there is a chance to challenge a chess champion at Liverpool’s Williamson Square and Exchange Flags at two free events taking place this Summer in the City Centre.

The events form part of 'Celebrating Summer', a programme of free events across the city centre organised by Liverpool Business Improvement District.

On the 26th of June, there will be simultaneous displays at Williamson Square, featuring British Chess Grand Master Daniel Gormally and Fide Master Glenn House.

On the 28th of June, you can join qualified chess coaches Dylan Mize and Michael Green for an afternoon of free public chess coaching from 1pm until 4pm at Horton House on Exchange Flags situated in Liverpool City Centre's The Seven Street's Quarter.

There will be more than 50 chessboards and sets available for the public to enjoy, so you can play with family and friends, or simply sit down and meet new people over the board in a fun, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Daniel Gormally was born in Hertford hospital, but soon moved to London. He first learned the moves at approximately seven years old, when his father Torsten taught him and his older sister. Gormally played for the English national team in the 2005 European Team Chess Championship and 2006 Chess Olympiad.

Glenn House was a relatively late starter at 18 years of age to competitive chess, winning the British Amateur Prix in 1986. Although he often remains unbeaten in league chess, he has managed to lose to any well known Grandmaster you have heard of, including Fabian Caruana, David Bronstein, Mickey Adams and Ginger GM, Simon Williams. He achieved the FIDE Master title in 2001 and the British Senior title in 2015.
