The HMS Prince of Wales Aircraft Carrier Visits The Liverpool City Region

HMS (His Majesty's Ship) Prince of Wales is led by Captain Will Blackett with a minimum crew of around 700 excluding civilians and visitors (crew complement), when there is aircraft on board, this number is expected to increase to approximately 1,600.

HMS Prince of Wales is described by the Ministry of Defence as “one of the most powerful surface warships ever constructed in the UK”, forming part of The Royal Navy’s fleet of Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers.

The Carrier's Flight Deck is 70 metres wide and 280 metres long, with enough food for 45 days. She has the ability to move 500 miles per day, she is expected to have a service lifespan of up to 50 years.

A number of duties that the Ship will be expected to partake in, include: enforcing no-fly zones, deploying Royal Marine Commandos, and delivering humanitarian aid.

1770 was the first ship bestowed the name, Prince of Wales.

The title Prince of Wales was created by Edward I in 1301, a title given to his son, Edward of Caernarfon, who later became Edward II.
