After an extensive renovation, The Black Horse and Rainbow is opening today, Friday the 24th of July, from 3pm, in Liverpool’s historic yet exceptionally eclectic Ropewalks neighbourhood.

The venue is located at 21-23 Berry Street, and was originally constructed in 1899 as The Masonic Arms, a Walkers of Warrington tied ales pub.

One of the Liverpool City Region’s leading independent hospitality operator, DGB Hospitality Group, is launching its ninth Liverpool City Centre venue which features a beautifully restored main bar, an incredible 250-capacity beer garden which even includes its own Guinness bar, a heated outdoor terrace, and a function room up on the first floor, all set in the heart of the City's upper part of town.

The Black Horse and Rainbow on Berry Street is excited to serve a fantastic collection of continental beers, cocktails, wines and spirits each day of the week.

The beer garden in particular is a focal point for all year round, from drinks in the Summer sunshine through to seasonal events and activities, and it also features a rather large outdoor screen for live sports.

There is also a retractable roof, with heating being installed later in the year offering outdoor hospitality no matter what month it is.

Sean Singleton, from DGB Hospitality Group, said: “It’s been a very busy few weeks on site and now we are ready to proudly unveil our latest venue, The Black Horse and Rainbow. It’s a truly historic site in Liverpool and one we have lovingly restored into a classic pub with four main spaces.”

He added: “During the refurbishment we’ve honoured its heritage, bringing back to life many fixtures and fittings which form the building’s past. It was originally called The Masonic Arms and after that it became Trader Jacks as a more traditional wet-led pub.”

Sean added: “Then the original Black Horse and Rainbow launched in 1990 with its own in-house brewery, later changing to The Metropolitan with the iconic club The Lemon Lounge upstairs which hosted countless club nights and events. Since 2015 the site was known as Red Door until early summer 2026.”

He said: “At DGB, we’re immensely passionate about creating communities. Whether it’s on the dancefloor, over brunch and dinner, or through late-night drinks with friends - and our brand-new venue on Berry Street continues this philosophy.”

The building is rich in history from the various names and ownerships it’s had over the decades, and now it enters another brand-new chapter, with extensive modernisation from top to bottom.

The Black Horse and Rainbow is the latest addition in DGB Hospitality Group’s growing portfolio which includes Gloria’s, Petit Café Berry Street, Petit Café Lark Lane, Loretta’s, Three Piggies, Pogue Mahone, Motel and Teddy’s.

The project has created 25 new hospitality jobs in the City, and enjoyed a £750,000 investment through its renovation alone.
