The Mousetrap Review: 5 Stars, 'Packed With Both Style & Substance' — The Liverpudlian Reviews Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap At The Floral Pavilion On Its 70th Anniversary UK Tour Straight From The West End

Cosy crime is one of my favourite subgenres, and Agatha Christie does them the best, with The Mousetrap being no exception.

The 70th Anniversary tour of The Mousetrap, the longest running play in the world, is currently enjoying a tour of the UK and Ireland. With the play gracing the shores of the Liverpool Bay Area and stopping by this week at The Floral Pavilion in the Liverpool Borough of Wirral.

The play is running at The Floral Pavilion from Monday the 6th until Saturday the 11th of November 2023. You can purchase tickets through the Floral Pavilion's website.

From staple murder mystery stories such as Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple offering somewhat comfort that there is a familiar face to save the day, yet there is nothing like a one-off murder mystery in which anything can happen. And that is exactly what The Mousetrap offers.

Each and every character is brimming with secrecy. Their suspicious antics bubbling over, leading to a plethora of guesses and plenty of speculation throughout the nearly two and a half hour play.

Whist a serious crime has been committed, it is in stark contrast to the play's warm setting, the famed Monkswell Manor — The warm glow of the fire, the range of armchairs and the settee that the characters make themselves comfortable on, the snow piling up on the window ledge, the blustering icy cold wind that creeps its way into the manor. It really is the perfect setting. And after all, Agatha Christie is a master of atmosphere, which makes it all the better that 70 years later this is still being conveyed in the most stylish and captivating manner.

The provocative and curious yet endearing characters offer a wonderfully brilliant combination that allows you to just sink right into the play. The Mousetrap is captivating and really gives the feel that you are not just a guest in the theatre house, there to see a great piece of performing arts, but that you are eavesdropping and involved in watching the scenes unfold and that the characters are completely unaware of your presence.

The Mousetrap is a joy to see unfold and is easily a play that can be watched time and time again. Not to mention enjoying the show in the elegant waterside venue that is the Floral Pavilion. The home to plenty of history for the performing arts, hosting an array of local and national performances, and which was host to Sir Ken Dodd as their first performance after reopening in 2008.

The play is produced by Adam Spiegel with Direction by Ian Talbot OBE and Denise Silvey. The cast of the iconic murder-mystery on tour includes Todd Carty (EastEnders, Grange Hill, Dancing on Ice) as Major Metcalf and Catherine Shipton (known for playing Lisa ‘Duffy’ Duffin in BBC drama Casualty) as Mrs. Boyle.

They will be joined by Rachel Dawson (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at the Gillian Lynn Theatre) as Mollie Ralston, Michael Lyle (Amedeus at National Theatre and RSC’s A Christmas Carol) as Giles Ralston, Shaun McCourt (The Railway Children at Kings Cross Theatre and War Horse at the National Theatre), as Christopher Wren, Leigh Lothian (Lovely Bones at Birmingham Rep and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical at Aldwych Theatre and on tour) as Miss Casewell, Steven Elliot (The Ladykillers UK tour and Associate Artist of Theatre Clwyd) as Mr. Paravicini, and Garyn Williams (The Corn is Green at the National Theatre) as Detective Sgt. Trotter.

The Mousetrap is a lot of fun, with a really solid cast that vividly brings this play to life in all of its glory during the elaborate 1950s period. It should absolutely be seen by all theatre lovers. Packed with both style and substance, Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap earns itself a thoroughly deserved 5 out of 5 Stars, or in our case, Liver Birds!
