An extraordinary Christmas tradition for tens of thousands of families, Light Before Christmas, makes its triumphant return to Liverpool Cathedral for its fourth spellbinding year.

From 28th November to 6th December, witness the magic come to life through a brand-new theme and completely new series of projection artworks, 'The Gift – a celebration of warmth, wonder and the joy of togetherness.'

Following years of sold-out success, this beloved family tradition is set to shine brighter than ever before, illuminating one of Liverpool’s most iconic landmarks with new, immersive light and sound experiences as the Cathedral plays host to an awe-inspiring journey punctuated by stunning projections and mesmerising soundscapes.

“Liverpool Cathedral was built by the people, for the people, and this year’s theme' The Gift, is the perfect reflection of that.” - The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool.

As the Cathedral transforms into a luminous wonderland, visitors are also invited to pause and connect not only with the breathtaking architecture and festive spirit, but with their loved ones and those less fortunate, embracing the true essence of this year’s theme.

Designed by the world-renowned Luxmuralis team, this year’s theme has been carefully chosen to reflect several elements: the gift of peace, the gift of Christmas, and how the Cathedral was gifted to the city by the same people who built it. For this reason, Light Before Christmas promises to be a magical, family-friendly experience for both young and old alike.

And to complete the experience, the Welsford Bistro will be serving a delicious Christmas market-inspired menu, perfect for those cosy winter nights. Visitors can indulge in festive delights as they soak in the sights and sounds of the light show, all while feeling that unmistakable sense that Christmas has truly begun.

The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said: “For many, the true start of Christmas begins with a visit to the Cathedral and Light Before Christmas, so I am delighted to see it return for its fourth year. Liverpool Cathedral was built by the people, for the people, and this year’s theme, The Gift, is the perfect reflection of that. Light Before Christmas provides families with the opportunity to experience the Cathedral like they have never seen it before, and I look forward to welcoming them and sharing the gift of peace and joy this Christmas.”

Peter Walker, Sculptor and Creative Director, Luxmuralis, said: “This marks our fourth year returning to Liverpool Cathedral, and it has truly become a highlight of our calendar. Our partnership allows us to push boundaries, creating what has become one of the world’s largest immersive experiences. The joy on families’ faces when they see the show is one of the most rewarding moments for me, and it’s now an essential part of my own Christmas tradition. I’m thrilled to see Light Before Christmas return this year.”

The largest cathedral in the UK and fifth largest in the world, Liverpool Cathedral is funded through its enterprise and fundraising efforts and activities, which in turn help keep the Cathedral free to enter. It does not receive any regular public or government money.

Built by the people for the people to the glory of God, it strives daily to maintain its visitor and missional status in the city and beyond.

Alissa Koopal, Director of Enterprise, Liverpool Cathedral, said: “Over the years, Light Before Christmas has become a beloved holiday tradition for families across the city and beyond. That’s why we continue to elevate the experience year after year, and this year’s show promises to be even more memorable than the last.”
