Welcome to the “Introduction to the Liverpool City Region” Podcast Series by The Liverpudlian. I’m Peter Eric Lang, and this podcast series will provide you with an introductory level of knowledge about The Liverpool City Region, an expansive metropolis that consists of six boroughs; the City of Liverpool and the Boroughs of Wirral, Halton, Sefton, St Helens and Knowsley.
These six boroughs share the same values, culture and intertwined heritage that has enabled the Region to thrive and become one of the most powerful and instantly recognisable cities in the world.
Episode 2: 'Introduction to the Liverpool City Region' with Peter Eric Lang, Ep. 2: Overview.

Welcome to the "Introduction to the Liverpool City Region" Podcast Series by The Liverpudlian. I'm Peter Eric Lang, and in this episode, we will have a brief overview of the Liverpool Region, its achievements and famous Liverpudlians that hail from across the City Region.
The City of Liverpool is the epicentre of the thriving metropolis that is the Liverpool City Region, spanning six close-knit boroughs that make our great city what it is. Comprising of the City of Liverpool and the Boroughs of Wirral, Halton, Sefton, St Helens and Knowsley.
Liverpool is the fifth-largest city in the UK, with the City Region population having more than 1.5 million people and the Liverpool Metropolitan Area which includes towns and villages just outside of the Region's border having a population of over 2 million people. The City is packed full of grand listed buildings, reaching skyscrapers, docklands and shipbuilders which line the waterfront. Cargo ships, cruise liners and ferries power through the River Mersey and the streets are lined with bustling crowds of workers, shoppers and tourists.
Liverpool is known throughout the world for its phenomenal achievements, several of which include:
Being the world-famous home of the fabled Liver Birds and the iconic Royal Liver Building, which was the tallest building in Europe for over 20 years and in the UK for 50 years.
The City has brought the world The Beatles, the best-selling and most influential artists of all time.
The City is also home to two of the biggest football clubs in the world, Liverpool FC and Everton FC, housed at Anfield and Goodison Park respectively.
In addition to all of that, the City Region created the world's first public park, Birkenhead Park, which inspired Central Park in New York City when the New York architect was visiting Liverpool.
The City is also credited with having revolutionised architecture across the globe through Oriel Chambers, built in 1864 and located on Water Street in the City Centre, in the Region's Commercial District.
The City is also home to the oldest deep-level underground train stations in the world running between Hamilton Square and James Street Station, these train lines transport millions of passengers a year below the River Mersey that flows through the heart of the City.
Not to mention that the City is home to two cathedrals, with incredible feats such as the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral which is the largest cathedral in the UK and fifth-largest in the world.
The Liverpool City Region really is a thriving hub of talent. It is home to famous Liverpudlians like Steven Gerrard, David Morrissey, Paul O'Grady, Ricky Tomlinson, Cilla Black, Sir Paul McCartney, Pete Burns, Jodie Comer, Clive Barker, Sir Ken Dodd, Shirley Ballas and countless others.
Liverpool is truly a melting pot of innovation, talent and pure magic.
