CITY OF LIVERPOOL, LIVERPOOL CITY REGION.
Sir Giles Gilbert Scott Honoured In New Scheme By Anglican Cathedral To Maintain Britain's Largest Cathedral

Liverpool Anglican Cathedral has launched a new giving scheme that enables people to support the vital upkeep of the building, with donations helping maintain the UK’s largest Cathedral.
Named in honour of the building’s architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, 'The Scott Circle' gives people the chance to support the Cathedral and ensure it remains a lasting icon in the city he entrusted it to.
Built by the people, for the people, Liverpool Cathedral was Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s masterpiece and held a profound significance for him. Best known as the architect of the iconic red telephone box and Battersea Power Station, Scott was appointed to design the Cathedral at the remarkable age of just 22. With no completed buildings to his name at the time, he went on to create one of the great triumphs of British architecture.
Liverpool Anglican Cathedral wishes for the new giving scheme to enable people to support the vital upkeep of the building, with donations helping towards maintaining the UK’s largest Cathedral.
Named in honour of the building’s architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, born in 1880, which was the same year Liverpool gained City Status, and simultaneously became its own Diocese. He died in 1960, with his life’s work, the Anglican Cathedral, reaching completion in 1974. The Hampstead-born architect was also responsible for Battersea Power Station, and for designing the famed K6 Red Telephone Box for King George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935.
‘The Scott Circle’ is a nod to the large circular dedication to Sir Giles Gilbert Scott RA, on the floor in the centre of the Great Space below the Vesty Tower.
Giles was the son of the prolific Sir George Gilbert Scott RA, a renowned Gothic Revivalist responsible for working on nearly 500 churches across Britain. He studied the works of Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, with his flair for Medieval architecture beginning through his works in Hamburg, Germany after winning a competition that kickstarted his career. After a long and carried career, George clearly passed down a generational love for Gothicism. Giles' very own son, Richard Gilbert Scott, designed the City of London’s Guildhall Art Gallery with his signature gothic postmodernism panache.
Through the generosity of its members, ‘The Scott Circle’ will support the Cathedral’s essential programme of major repairs, restoration and ongoing maintenance, which costs over £1 Million each year.

The largest cathedral in the UK and fifth largest in the world, Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is funded through its enterprise, fundraising efforts and activities, which in turn help keep the Cathedral free to enter, despite it not receiving any regular public or government money.
Hosting the largest pipe organ in the United Kingdom, with 10,268 pipes, and with its Vestey Tower (the singular tower stretching into the sky) standing an impressive 505ft (154m) above the River Mersey, Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral is one of the many imposing features of the Liverpool Skyline.
The Cathedral often describes itself as built by the people for the people to the glory of God. With their daily ambition being to maintain its visitor and missional status across the City and beyond.
The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said: “People’s generosity for the care and upkeep of Liverpool Cathedral is so important for a Cathedral that gets no Government funding. It is part of our determination to preserve this awe-inspiring building for generations to come. The Scott Circle offers a fantastic opportunity for those who feel a deep connection to the Cathedral to contribute towards its preservation – a fitting tribute, given that it was built for the people, to the glory of God.”

Katie Dyer, Acting Director of Fundraising, said: “Liverpool Cathedral was built through the generous contributions of ordinary people. But each year we have to carry out vital repairs, maintenance and conservation on this extraordinary building. By joining the Scott Circle, you can do your part to ensure that the Cathedral can remain open and safe for the people of Liverpool and beyond."
