Liverpool Anglican Cathedral has launched a new giving scheme allowing people to support the vital upkeep of the building, with donations helping towards maintaining the UK’s largest Cathedral.

Named in honour of the building’s architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, The Scott Circle gives people the chance to support the Cathedral and ensure it remains a lasting icon in the city he entrusted it to.

Built by the people, for the people, Liverpool Cathedral was Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s masterpiece and held a profound significance for him. Best known as the architect of the iconic red telephone box and Battersea Power Station, Scott was appointed to design the Cathedral at the remarkable age of just 22. With no completed buildings to his name at the time, he went on to create one of the great triumphs of British architecture.

The largest cathedral in the UK and fifth largest in the world, Liverpool Cathedral is funded through its enterprise and fundraising efforts and activities, which in turn help keep the Cathedral free to enter. It does not receive any regular public or government money.

Hosting the largest pipe organ in the United Kingdom, with 10,268 pipes, with its Vestey Tower standing an impressive 154m above the River Mersey, Liverpool Cathedral is one of the imposing features of the Liverpool skyline. Built by the people for the people to the glory of God, it strives daily to maintain its visitor and missional status in the city and beyond.

The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said: “People’s generosity for the care and upkeep of Liverpool Cathedral is so important for a Cathedral that gets no Government funding. It is part of our determination to preserve this awe-inspiring building for generations to come. The Scott Circle offers a fantastic opportunity for those who feel a deep connection to the Cathedral to contribute towards its preservation – a fitting tribute, given that it was built for the people, to the glory of God.”.
