Rehearsals Are Now Underway For The Premiere Of The Competition-Winning Production

Following its unanimous win at the 2023 What Happens Next? Competition, Sean McLoughlin’s debut play I Am Steven Gerrard is gearing up to be the hottest ticket in town with 75% of its tickets already sold. The premiere production will kick off at The Hope Street Theatre on 24 January and run until 28 January 2024.
The play written by Huyton-based McLoughlin is a story of football, aspiration, music, Steven Gerrard, loneliness, reality television, Love, religion, friends, loss, passion, enemies, Davina McColl, politics, ambition, family, virginity, past generations, and the impact they leave behind. I Am Steven Gerrard is a one-man play performed by Joe Cowin, that explores the complexities of masculinity and what it means to be a real man in society today.

TipTray’s Artistic directors Maisy Gordon and Evan Byrne are thrilled with how the production is shaping up “Sean’s play captures the beating heart of the city beautifully through his pitch-perfect poetry and when paired with Joe’s powerful portrayal of Shane and Amy’s sensitive and striking direction, the play soars to new heights. We are thrilled with how things are progressing and with two weeks of rehearsals left, we can’t wait to showcase the final production to Liverpool theatregoers.”
I Am Steven Gerrard is directed by Liverpool-based Amy Roberts whose recent credits include A Pretty Sh*tty Love at Theatr Clwyd and One Man Poe (Threedumb Theatre) with lighting design by Young Everyman and Playhouse graduate Kieran Sing and is produced by Maisy Gordon and Evan Byrne for TipTray Theatre. The production has received public funding and support through Arts Council England as well a £1000 prize fund, dramaturgical support from Olivier Award-winning Papatango Theatre company and support and theatre hire from The Hope Street Theatre.
