CITY OF LIVERPOOL, LIVERPOOL CITY REGION.
People Being Treated In Two Of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Many Sites Across The Liverpool City Region Borough's Are Set To Benefit From An £8.8 Million Investment In Completely Transforming The Treatment Facilities

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has announced plans to refurbish and upgrade its treatment facility units in Halton and the Wirral.
The sites are just two of the locations where The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre provides systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT), an umbrella term for treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies and supportive therapies such as the bone-strengthening drugs given to some people with cancer.
The exciting plans will be jointly funded by The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust and through a fundraising appeal by Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.
The £8.8m investment includes developing a brand-new SACT treatment unit at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral (CCC-Wirral) to replace the Delamere Unit where patients currently have these treatments.
The new unit will be located on the ground floor of CCC-Wirral with views out onto woodland to provide a calming and peaceful environment.
It will be bright and modern and will also be larger than the current unit, which still provides excellent care but does not have the space for the volume of patients treated there nowadays. Relocating the unit will also bring it closer to the Radiotherapy and Outpatients areas of CCC-Wirral.
Patients treated at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Halton SACT unit will benefit from the complete modernisation and redesign of the existing facility known as CANTreat.
Patients in both units will also enjoy comfortable treatment chairs and more flexible bays that offer patients the option of chatting to each other if they wish or having greater privacy if they prefer.
Together, the investment will ensure that patients having chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other cancer treatments in Halton and Wirral benefit from bright, comfortable, welcoming and modern facilities more similar to those provided in The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s main hospital in Liverpool which opened in 2020.
Now that the £8.8 Million investment has been approved in principle by The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Trust Board and Clatterbridge Cancer Charity’s independent Board of Trustees, further work will take place to develop detailed designs for both projects.
Patients and staff will be involved in developing the detailed designs to ensure their views and ideas help shape the final proposals. Bids will be invited from contractors interested in working on the projects and the final costed business cases will then be approved before work begins.
Work on the Halton SACT treatment unit could start in August 2026 and is expected to take around three months.
Design work for the new SACT treatment unit at CCC-Wirral will take place during 2026. Building could start in 2027 and, as this is a more complex construction project, could take up to a year.
Joan Spencer, Chief Executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said: “As the region’s specialist cancer centre, we care about every aspect of a patient’s treatment experience not just our clinical expertise and providing the most advanced and most effective new treatments. That includes making our treatment facilities as calming and welcoming as possible to support people’s wellbeing.”
She added: “Many cancer treatments take several hours so it is incredibly important that patients can enjoy a peaceful environment, beautiful surroundings and comfortable facilities while they are here.”
Joan, said: “Our unique network of specialist cancer units across Cheshire and Merseyside means that, where clinically appropriate, patients can have their treatment close to home. This significant investment in upgrading our Halton and CCC-Wirral SACT treatment units is a sign of our continued commitment to that principle of ‘local where possible, centralised where clinically necessary’.”
Katrina Bury, Chief Executive of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said:
Clatterbridge Cancer Charity is delighted to be involved in these important and exciting developments for patients.”
She added: “For 30 years, our Charity’s supporters have helped fund projects to improve the lives of people with cancer in Cheshire and Merseyside, from improvements to infrastructure, to research into new treatments, cutting edge equipment, enhancing the patient environment and so much more.”
Katrina, said: “We are hopeful they will respond to this appeal with their trademark enthusiasm and generosity.”
She said: “It is fitting that in the 30th year of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity our fundraisers will once again be helping lay the foundations for the treatments of the future.”

Sarah Mullis, Ward Manager of the Delamere Unit at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral, said: “The Delamere Unit has been a huge part of CCC-Wirral for more than 20 years now and we have a fantastic team here but the volume of patients has really grown since it opened. It is very exciting that we are now going to be able to design and build a brand-new treatment unit that will care for future generations as well as patients who currently come here.”
Laura Selby, Ward Manager of the CANTreat Unit at Halton, said: “All the staff here are incredibly excited about the plans. It is going to be brilliant for patients and for staff as it will increase our treatment capacity and enable us to offer more complex and combination therapies. Cancer care is evolving so fast with new treatments and patients staying on treatment for longer.”
Laura added: “Creating additional treatment capacity will mean more local patients can have their care closer to home instead of having to travel to our clinics further away in Liverpool and Wirral.”
